Cell-phone lobby 911 win means ‘more people will die’

Rules proposed by the Federal Communications Commission in 2014 intended to make cellphone carrier companies such as AT&T and Verizon provide more accurate caller locations for emergency dispatchers were weakened by a wireless carrier industry lobbying campaign, reports The Center for Public Integrity. The FCC estimates more than 10,000 people die annually when calling 911 from a cellphone and emergency dispatchers can’t get a quick and accurate location of where they are. The industry maneuvers “allowed the carriers to shift the cost and responsibility of locating 911 callers from the carriers to the public.”
