At least 154 inmates died in a Kentucky jails during the past 6½ years. “Trouble Behind Bars” – a five-part series by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting – documents how “numerous jail inmates have died or been injured because officials at all levels of government failed to ensure their health and safety.” The months-long investigation found that at least several inmate deaths listed officially as “natural, “unknown” or “autopsy pending” appear to have involved jail staff lapses, misconduct or indifference.
