Police stops in Greensboro, N.C. disproportionately target blacks

Black drivers in the town of Greensboro, N.C., are much more likely that others to be stopped, searched and arrested by local police, The New York Times reported Oct. 24. The Times investigation examined police data from North Carolina’s third-largest city and found the same disparities across the state, which collects the most detailed data in the nation on traffic stops. The Times “uncovered wide racial differences in measure after measure of police conduct” at a time when officer-involved shootings have “sparked a national debate over how much racial bias skews law enforcement behavior, even subconsciously.”
