Lottery spending in Maine's poorest towns is 200 times more per person than in wealthier areas, according to the a study by Cornell University and the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting. Among findings in data collected by the university is this equation: "For every 1 percent increase in joblessness in a given zip code, sales of scratch and draw tickets jump 10 percent."
