In June, NECIR hosted an investigative reporting workshop funded by the McCormick Foundation. Over twenty journalists from across the country came to Boston to learn how to conduct investigations surrounding the Affordable Care Act.
The workshop, Follow the Money: Fraud and the Affordable Care Act, taught these select journalists how to report on the biggest change to health care in the United States since Medicare and Medicaid were passed in 1965. Some of the topics covered included:
- Where fraud is most likely to occur
- How to uncover and investigate fraud related to the act
- Story ideas and brainstorming sessions
Taught by an award-winning panel of investigative reporters, the training was a success, with the reporters in attendance ready to go back to their news outlets to cover how the Affordable Care Act could effect their community.
In addition, the McCormick Foundation, in partnership with Poynter's News University, funded a webinar follow up to the workshop. The webinar, taught by Fred Schulte, Senior Reporter for The Center for Public Integrity, touches on many of the topic areas that were discussed at the workshop. Anyone interested in learning how to start investigating issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act are invited to view the webinar. The cost is free.
