Public colleges and universities spend billions on athletics, students foot the bill

Public universities have spent “more than $10.3 billion in mandatory student fees and other subsidies” on their sports teams in the past five years, according to an analysis by The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Huffington Post. Despite protests from students at public universities across the country, student fees have risen by 10 percent during that time, according to the investigation. The Chronicle/HuffPost analysis found that the schools making the least from ticket sales tend to shell out the most in these subsidies for athletic programs, “meaning that students who have the least interest in their college’s sports teams are often required to pay the most to support them.”
