Police department reforms mandated by the U.S. Justice Department are costly for taxpayers and sometimes ineffective, according to an investigation by The Washington Post and Frontline. The investigation examined data from 10 police departments where the Justice Department have intervened due to “patterns of excessive or deadly force,” finding that “use of force by officers increased during and after the agreements” at half of the targeted departments. At many of these departments, the price tag associated with implementing the overhauls is expected to exceed $600 million, a fortune local taxpayers will likely have to pay, The Post and Frontline report.
