The New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) will expand the depth and breadth of its reporting on genetics with the help of a $35,000 grant from the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation. Building on the suite of award-winning health care reporting by Senior reporter Beth Daley, NECIR will further explore the impact of genetics and genetic testing on health care quality and costs.
“Beth Daley’s reporting has revealed major issues regarding regulation and conflicts of interest in the field of genetic testing,” said NECIR Executive Director Joe Bergantino. “This vital support from NIHCM will empower her to dig deeper into the industry and shine a light on a dark corner of our country’s health care system.”
This year, Daley was also awarded a $15,000 McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism by The City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism to look more closely at unregulated genetic tests, and has so far completed an investigation into the science behind a new generation of mental health genetic tests. Daley's previous work on genetic testing won first place in the investigative category, small market, from the national Association of Health Care Journalists in 2015 and also won first place in the inaugural health care journalism category from the Society of American Business Writers and Editors in 2015.
