Examining medical care in California prison

California Forensic Medical Group, a private contractor that provides medical services to correctional facilities, is growing exponentially. It oversees the treatment of about 13,000 inmates in detention facilities in 27 counties across the state. However, the group is now coming under fire after deaths of inmates in their care, reports FairWarning.

“The outsourcing of medical care in jails and prisons reflects a nationwide push for privatizing government duties. The private sector, outsourcing advocates say, offers better services at a lower cost. But while other government services have outspoken constituencies, jails and prisons do not. Inmates usually have little clout to demand change …."
