During World War II, scientists used 60,000 American troops as guinea pigs in experiments involving mustard gas and other chemical agents. The program, once held secret, was formally declassified in 1993. However, no officials have addressed the fact the troops were grouped by race. Some of the men involved tell their stories for the first time to NPR.
