A database compiled by The Washington Post shows 385 instances of fatal police shootings in the first five months of 2015. In 80 percent of cases, victims were armed and dangerous. But 62 cases involved subjects who carried toy guns or had no weapons at all.

“About half of the time, police were responding to people seeking help with domestic disturbances and other complex social situations: A homeless person behaving erratically. A boyfriend threatening violence. A son trying to kill himself… Nearly a quarter of those killed were identified … as mentally ill.”
