Though the problem of toxic lead paint has largely been eradicated in more affluent Chicago neighborhoods, more than a fifth of the children tested in poorer areas have brain-damaging levels of lead in their systems, an investigation by the Chicago Tribune found.

“Most of the lead that poisons children today comes from paint in homes built before 1978 where windows and doors haven't been replaced over the years. Toxic dust forms as the painted surfaces are repeatedly opened and closed, creating a hazard especially for young children….”
