With over 35,000 injuries of nursing employees tracked by the Department of Labor Statistics, these workers incur nearly three times the rate of “back and other musculoskeletal injuries” as construction workers, just by doing their daily work of moving their patients. Part of the reason for this may be that hospitals neglect to provide training in safe patient handling to prevent these injuries, according to an NPR investigation.
From the story: “In terms of sheer number of these injuries, BLS data show that nursing assistants are injured more than any other occupation, followed by warehouse workers, truckers, stock clerks and registered nurses.”
