Hospitals are helping to pay for Boston municipal services such as fire and police departments. Colleges and univerities? Not so much.
The city of Boston asks certain non-profits to help pay for these municipal services (like snow patrol) in place of paying taxes. However, centers for higher learning aren't doing their part under the now three-year program.
From the story: "Fifteen of the 19 colleges, including the city’s wealthiest universities, did not pay amounts requested by the city during fiscal 2014, which concluded at the end of June, according to city data. Northeastern University, which was asked for $2.5 million this past fiscal year, gave nothing, even though it paid $886,000 in each of the previous two years and $30,000 in fiscal 2011."
